BUSINESS SKILLS FOR SOUTH AFRICA (BSSA)
NIC and the then Coopers and Lybrand - PriceWaterHouseCoopers - adopted a very popular course on business skills for established business people, which is run throughout the country. Extensive use is made of other training courses which meet particular needs of members.

DBSP
NIC has teamed up with a training partner to start a Dynamic Business Start-up Programme (DBSP) which caters for the unemployed or those who want to start their own businesses.

ADVICE CENTRES
NIC pioneered the established of business information and advice centres, starting some 20 years ago. It operates several of its own and maintains a very close link with a number of others.

NIC NEWS
NIC News is a bi-monthly publication of the NIC office. The newsletter keeps the business community informed on activities of the chamber and up coming business events. It also provides useful business tips and other helpful information to SMME's and cooperatives.

BUSINESS LINKAGES
NIC is running a programme to help SMME's and cooperatives to obtain government and private sector contracts. NIC offers service and training in the form of seminars, workshops and trade shows as well as meetings between big and small businesses.

PROCUREMENT AND TENDERING TRAINING
As part of an overall strategy to increase procurement opportunities in both the private and public sectors, NIC operates an aggressive outreach and lobbying programme to ensure that its members are included in the contracting of goods and services.

CONTRACT MANUFACTURING
This programme is for entry-level manufacturers who do not have capacity to carry out the necessary production required by customers. NIC facilitates the linkage between the two companies and oversees their relationship for the duration of the contract.

EXPOSURE
NIC exposes its members' products by means of a full colour catalogue that is made available to buyers in the private and public sectors as well as through trade exhibitions that are organized throughout the country. Furthermore, NIC lists on supplier databases of organizations to promote its members' goods and services.

COOPERATIVE SUPPORT PROGRAMME NIC has developed a programme that focuses on the needs and challenges of coops in South Africa. Training modules have been designed for use in the primary, secondary and tertiary coops.

RESEARCH
From time to time NIC conducts research and disseminates findings to its members. The research is more oriented towards marketing opportunities taking into cognizance key ingredients such as procurement procedures, market intelligence gathering, tendering insights and processes, loans, etc.

NIC has adopted a cluster method that will make easy to improve its offering to members:

CLOTHING AND TEXTILE
NIC is currently lobbying Government institutions to set aside a reasonable percentage of procurement spend for previously disadvantaged manufacturers. Furthermore, members are also assisted to improve their position in the value chain to ensure sustainable growth.

AGRO-PROCESSING
NIC encourages its members to take advantage of the numerous opportunities that are emerging in this sector. Government has introduced wide ranging strategies that support previously disadvantaged entrepreneurs in agro-processing, and NIC has positioned itself as a key stakeholder in this regard.

FURNITURE AND UPHOLSTERY
NIC is currently coordinating the manufacture and repair of furniture and upholstery products. The chamber also assists in the marketing of these products by linking its members with large furniture retailers nationally. New entrants are put through Seta accredited training and supported with aftercare.

LEATHER AND FOOTWEAR
The footwear cluster is one of the most successful NIC projects and has managed to secure big contracts with schools nationally. Plans are afoot to supply other sectors such as the security industry with safety footwear.

ARTS AND CRAFTS
NIC is currently organizing different players in this cluster with a view to representing them with one voice and exposing them to different markets locally and abroad.

ARTISANS AND TECHNICIANS
The majority of small-scale artisans and technicians are operating in the second economy where profitability is low. NIC is addressing this by assisting its members to be more profitable and pitch for more lucrative work.

BEAUTY CARE
NIC has come up with mechanisms specifically tailored to sustain and grow businesses operating in this sector. The chamber also intends to facilitate the manufacture of beauty care products locally and involve its members in its distribution networks.

TISSUE AND SANITARY PAPER MANUFACTURING
NIC is facilitating a tissue and sanitary paper manufacturing project. The products are marketed and sold nationally.

STEEL FABRICATION
Some of the biggest challenges facing members are high input costs and access to markets. NIC has come up with a strategy to facilitate collective buying of materials and is also engaging other stakeholders to open up the markets for members' products.
